The Laurier-Stedman Writing contest is back.  All interested students are invited to an information meeting to be held on Wednesday, October 16th during both lunches in Portable 6.  We’ll discuss the timelines of this writing contest as well as entry requirements.  If you have any questions, speak to Mr. Heida.  See you there.

Attention all swimmers, thanks for all that showed up for our first practice yesterday.  There will be no practice on Thanksgiving Monday and Wednesday because of parent interviews.  Practice will resume on October 21st at 7 am WGSC Pool.

For those students who signed up for the Lakehead University liaison visit, please note that the new presentation date is this coming Tuesday, October 15th at 9:00 am in the library.

Attention students needing to accumulate community involvement hours.  Brantwood is currently looking for volunteers at their school events, fundraising events, and programs, among other things.  Please see the opportunity posted on the board outside of Student Services.  Brantwood also welcomes co-op placements.

Are you planning on graduating in June and are interested in pursuing a college education?  Would you like to visit a popular college campus before committing to a school?  Well look no further, Mrs. Ronson is organizing a free bus trip to Fanshawe College on Wednesday, October 16th.  If you are interested, then please sign up with Mrs. Ronson in Student Services by Wednesday, October 9th.

Students looking to acquire some community involvement hours this coming weekend should check the Community Involvement Opportunities Board.  Tomorrow Saturday, October 5th the Rotary Perch Fry is taking place at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club.  Volunteers are needed to help clear tables and serve food.  For information students should contact Cam Weir at 519-770-0625 or by e-mail at camweir17@gmail.com.  Students are reminded to complete their Community Involvement Activities purple form and hand it in to Student Services once community hours have been acquired.  It is not necessary to wait until you’ve accumulated all 40 community hours before you hand in your purple form.  Forms are available in Student Services.

The SJC Gazette newspaper crew is meeting again today at 3 p.m. in Portable 6.  Remember to speak to our editors Meagan Cavin, Makayla Cavin or Merone Campbell if you have any questions about your story assignment.  And newcomers are most certainly welcome.  Make you voice heard, write for the SJC Gazette.

Students are reminded to ensure that the community hours they accumulate are eligible according to Ministry guidelines.  Hours should be for non-profit organizations and not duties that someone would normally be paid for.  Hours cannot be accumulated during school hours.  If you are unsure if your hours will count, please contact your guidance counsellor.  The community involvement hours forms are available on the black shelving unit in Student Services and they include information on the back about eligible and ineligible activities.  Again, when in doubt, ask questions.

Attention Grade 12 students looking to attend the University of Guelph in the fall.  The University of Guelph has many scholarships to be awarded.  They have 8 President’s Scholarships, 2 Lincoln Alexander Scholarships and 2 Chancellor’s Scholarships.  Each scholarship has a value of $42,000.00 and includes a research assistantship position and mentorship by one of Guelph’s leading professors.  Students much achieve a minimum 90% admission average to apply.  For more information see the poster on the bulletin board outside of Student Services or go to admission.uoguelph.ca/topscholarships.  Applications are due to the University of Guelph by January 27, 2020.

Attention grade 12 students looking to attend the University of Toronto next fall.  The University of Toronto has a National Scholarship.  This award covers tuition, incidental, and residence fees for up to four years of undergraduate study.  Selection is based on superior academic performance, original and creative thought, and exceptional extra-curricular achievement in a broad context.  More information is posted on the bulletin board outside of Student Services or can be obtained on www.uoft.me/national-scholarship.  Applications are due to the University of Toronto by Thursday, October 24, 2019.

Attention curlers, anyone interested in trying out for the boys or girls curling team, come see Mr. Todd in Room 202 at 8:30 a.m. or on your lunch.  New curlers are welcome.  Mr. Todd doesn’t have junior lunch, but feel free to come into 202 during your lunch and Mr. Todd will take the time for you.

The blessing of the newly created Rosary Garden will be taking place on Thursday, October 3rd at 3:30 in the courtyard.  If you helped to create the garden in June or if you wish to attend, please see Madame in Room 210 so that arrangements can be made based on the number of people attending.

If you have not yet signed up on the list but would like to join, please come.  All are welcome.  See Mrs. Marriott if you can’t make it today but would still like to join.  Again, the rehearsal is from 3:15 to 4:15 in room 142 today.
